Pensions

Why I write this blog

By Sir Peter Thornton KC

As we get into our later years, we look to our pensions for financial support. For many, the state pension is their sole support. For others, they may be fortunate enough to have a workplace pension or prudent enough (if they have the money) to have built up their own private pensions. One way or another it all counts.

The purpose of this website is to write about pensions and other topics of importance to older people as and when they arise. I want to update us all on News that affects us and that could have meaning and impact on our lives. For example, on the topic of pensions, the pension age is likely to increase in the relatively near future to 67 and then again to 68 and the triple lock is not likely to last forever. Let’s keep informed.

I also want to write about these topics as Views, commenting or expressing an opinion. Not just pensions, which affect all of us, but wills, lasting powers of attorney, money, inheritance tax, scams, health and well-being, home, care, rights and much more.

The purpose is to prepare for our later years and to be a little bit more organised. That will help us and make life easier. It will also help those who will be left behind after our death. A little organisation now will help them manage all the administrative stress and strain that follows a death. Having details of savings, bank accounts and insurance policies to hand, as well as details of GP and other professionals, makes such a difference, particularly at a time of grieving. Leaving behind a file of factual information - I call mine my Death File - is a great help at a difficult time.

We can do quite a lot to help - now for later.

In my book The Later Years, I set out the 10 steps to be taken after death, five in five days, and the other five to follow. I guide you through the steps. For details on what to do and how to do it look at Chapter 10 of the book. Friends tell me this is helpful.

This website and the book are related but separate. Book orders are handled by the publisher or through bookshops or online booksellers, not through this website. The website is in addition to the book, providing news and updates and discussing topics. Not forgetting, regular Top Tips to act as a gentle reminder of what to do and what to avoid.

And, above all, I want to be positive. And why not? The last Census demonstrated that the over 65s are happier, less anxious and have a greater sense of self-worth than any other age group. As Shirley Bassey said, “You don’t get older, you get better.“

Recent research suggests that cognitive well-being can be improved in our later years, with quite modest effort. And the experts say it’s never too late - for a little mental and physical exercise. And while mental and physical health are not to be ignored, according to research the most significant aspect of health is said to be social health, good and regular connections with family and friends.

So, I look forward to joining you on the path to better understanding and, let’s say it, better enjoyment of later life. I hope this website helps.
